Founded in 1954, Wolfie Cohen’s Rascal House returns as a late-night hot spot with a New York vibe located in Sarasota’s trendy Rosemary District. Epicure Market, in addition to Southern California’s Jerry’s Famous Deli. Rascal House had the quintessential elements of a Jewish delicatessen, namely a large selection of deli soups and sandwiches (typically listed on an oversized laminated menu), a bowl of cold pickles and a basket of assorted rolls for every table. While Rascal House's featured dish was their classic stacked corned beef sandwich, they also served Jewish home cooking, such as matzah brei, a breakfast meal consisting of strips of matzoh cooked like scrambled eggs. For several years, Wolfie's featured a sign that read "The only thing that needs to come dressed is our chickens!"[1] (meaning dining was casual, not clothing optional). Cohen also founded a third Jewish deli, Pumpernik's, at 67th Street and Collins Avenue, which is also closed. We’re proud of our history, our reputation, and the fact that we’re still a Cleveland hometown favorite.

After the first couple years in business, word got out that Rascal House was a unique place to get high quality food, and customers were hungry for it! Even back in the early 80’s, the menu featured pizza, sandwiches, hamburgers, French fries, salads, and more! People loved the variety, but more importantly, they loved being able to get it all at one place. In 1980, Mike and Fouly Frangos turned their passion for food and service into a high quality fast food restaurant in downtown Cleveland. A sign at the top of the image reads "Wolfie's Restaurant Retail Shop Sandwich Shop Fountain Wolfie's." From the 1970’s until the restaurant’s closing in 2001, when the property was sold to a developer, Wolfie’s was featured in film and on television. The '80’s/'90’s sitcom, THE GOLDEN GIRLS, starring Betty White and Bea Arthur, often referenced the characters eating at Wolfie’s. Wolfie’s was also seen on the TV show, MIAMI VICE with Don Johnson.

With their hard work and attention to detail, it didn’t take long for the restaurant to catch on. Rascal House became a “home away from home” for hungry college kids and an office favorite for downtown Cleveland’s working crowd. The restaurants became known for its baskets of unlimited assorted varieties of miniature rolls and danishes and stainless steel buckets of half-sour pickles, cold sauerkraut, and other vegetables that were served at no additional cost with meals. Manny Miklowitz continued to run the bake shop untilhe retired in 1974 and continued to reside in Miami Beach with his wife, Esther Gurfein Miklowitz.
He regularly dined there with his family and right-hand man, Hymie Lazar. Lansky’s son, Buddy, married a Rascal House waitress. Lansky was known to have successfully joined together the major organized crime families into what became known as the "National Crime Syndicate." The role of Hyman Roth in THE GODFATHER, PART 2, was based on Meyer Lansky. Wolfie's is definitely kid-friendly, with options especially appealing to the youngest diners. I see why this place has so many good reviews.
